Pastor Post: August 30, 2013

The Pastor Post is a regular update from Pastor Matt with a brief meditation as well as information on upcoming events in the life of Cornerstone Church.

August 30, 2013

The new ministry year is upon us. From Labor Day 2013 through Memorial Day 2014, our church focuses on a ministry theme and attempts to walk faithfully with God together. We hope you’ll walk with us.

This year’s ministry focus is “Fruitfulness through Faithfulness.” The leaders of this church believe the next year needs to be an intentional heart, mind, and hands effort at serving God faithfully, especially in the area of praying for, caring for, and sharing Christ with people far from God.

Over the next 4 Sundays, I (Pastor Matt) will introduce and describe this theme in Sunday morning sermons. Use this month to get your heart and head around the theme. Don’t feel like you have to start out this new ministry year at a 100 miles per hour. Start by praying for your heart. Listen to God’s Word. Listen to God’s Spirit. Share your hopes, dreams, and fears with friends in your small group. I’m looking forward to this year with you.

1) Our Small Groups are launching this week (except for a few, keep reading). Check out Sunday’s bulletin insert for a small group location and time that works for you. Most of our groups will be sermon-based. Come and listen to the sermon on Sunday. Get in the Word after the sermon and start asking how the truths of God relate to your life. Then, come ready to share your ideas with your small group. Also, be ready to serve with your small group this year in a variety of settings. By the way, the two Sunday night groups (meeting at the Stuelke’s and Olson’s) won’t start until September 8th because of Labor Day weekend. Pastor Matt’s small group study on parenting starts Thursday September 12 at 7PM.

2) Praying for Linn County: One prong of this year’s ministry focus is daily prayer for people far from God. One way you can be praying is through Serve the City’s MyT2Save (‘might to save”) prayer initiative. Talk to Doug Hammes for more details. The long and short of it is that a team of people from different churches across Linn County is being formed to pray by name for every resident of Linn County. Would you be willing to pray for some of these people that they’d be drawn closer to God?

3) Jewish High Holy Days in Flint: Join us in Flint class Sunday September 1, 8th & 15th at 9:00 AM as we celebrate and learn about the Jewish High Holy Days. Our creative God included things for us to hear, see, taste, build and do. These holidays appeal to everyone and tell the story of Christ’s return and our redemption from sin. Great reasons to celebrate! Flint class is for all ages; everyone is welcome. Bring your Bible and a heart’s desire to learn about God!

4) Grades 6-12 – Get Together on Saturday, September 14th, 6-9:30 pm: Feast of Tabernacles booth-building at Gardners, 2021 Turner Rd., Central City. We will be having supper, and then building booths to eat our dessert in and sharing scripture about the Feast of Tabernacles. Questions: Call David or Colleen Gardner, 842-3225.

Excited to serve with you,
Pastor Matt

Sacred Parenting Bible Study

Parenting Bible Study – 8 Weeks

Fall 2013: Starts September 12

Thursdays at 7PM

Location: Pastor Matt and Carrie Proctor’s home

Dear Potential Study Participant,

Have you ever felt like a useless parent? Have you tried different parenting techniques only to continue to struggle as a parent? Do you struggle with guilt in the area of parenting?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the questions above, you are a normal parent. Parenting is one of the most difficult things in the world, but just because it is difficult, doesn’t mean we can ignore our important responsibilities.

Would you be willing to commit the next 8 weeks to growing as a parent? Would you take 90 minutes each week for 8 weeks to focus on your heart?

We’d like to invite you to a different kind of parenting course. It’s not more “how-to-be-a-perfect-parent” ideas. It’s not more “10-tricks-to-raising-children.” It’s a course that says parenting has much more to do with the soul of the parent than the behavior of their children. And so, would you take 8 weeks and think about parenting in a different way?

The study we’ll be doing is a DVD-based study taught by Gary Thomas. We’ll watch short video clips as a group and then discuss how the truths of the study relate to our personal lives as parents. The group will be small, under 12 parents (probably 6-8). Each couple will receive a participant guide that only costs $5. We’ll also see if a different couple would like to bring a snack or a dessert each week.

If you are interested in attending the class, either call or email Matt or Carrie Proctor by September 9. The class starts September 12 and will meet 8 consecutive weeks until October 31. Even if you have one or two conflicts on your calendar already, please still consider joining the class.

You can read a bit about the study or watch a short video here:

August 11, 2013: Acts 6:8-7-53 “Rejected Redeemer”

Dr. Mark McCreary (church member and philosophy professor at Kirkwood) continued our series in Acts with a look at Stephen’s famous speech before the 1st century Jewish Sanhedrin.

Mark asks an intriguing question, “Is it possible we are actually opposing the very thing we thought we were promoting?”
