March 21, 2013

Dear Church Family,

As I look to the future for our church, I get excited. Not because we are growing in numbers, though we are. Not because we won’t be able to fit in the theater much longer, though it’s coming soon. I get excited because this church knows that buildings, programs, and money don’t grow churches or fulfill the Great Commission; the God of the Gospel does. We know that the good news of Jesus Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit, and the ministry and prayers of the saints are the key to personal and community redemption.

And so, I regularly pray for us just like Paul did in Philippians 1:3-7: I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. (NIV)

What’s ahead:

An Evening Of Worship And Prayer: This Sunday night March 24 from 6:00-7:30PM at New Covenant Bible Church (3090 N. Center Point Rd) over 37 congregations and ministries will gather to worship before the LORD.

Holy Week Outreach: For one hour Monday night through Thursday night (approx. 6:30-7:30PM), small teams from our church will be going out into our community to invite people to our Holy Week services, as well as, offer to pray for them and share Christ with them. We are still looking for people willing to knock on doors and for people to come and pray from 6:30-7:30PM for the teams that are going out. Please consider bringing your families to participate. We will have a training for this event at 8:30AM this Sunday morning (3/24) at Collins Road Theater.

Good Friday Service, March 29th 6:30-7:45PM–Please join us for our combined worship service with Northbrook Baptist Church, 1700 Boyson Rd NE. Childcare will be provided. We’d like people to bring snacks and desserts to share for after the service.

Spring Spiritual Life Retreat: On Friday and Saturday April 26th and 27th, there will be another opportunity for you to participate in a spiritual life retreat.  We’ll be studying and practicing Sabbath – a time of resting before God and in community with each other.  Festivities will begin at 6 Friday evening at the Stuelke residence (Center Point, IA) for dinner and an opening session.  Then we’ll spend 8am to 5pm on Saturday at the new Faith Bible Church building.  Cost will be $35 for the weekend. Anyone who attended the Fall 2012 spiritual life retreat may attend the spring retreat at no cost.  Watch for registration forms and further details in the coming weeks.

**We also have an updated church directory. You can find it under the Members section in pdf form. If you can’t access that section, email me for login instructions. I highly highly encourage you to use this directory as a prayer guide. Maybe consider dividing the directory up into 5 or 7 groups and then pray for 1 group each day of the week so that you are praying for our entire church family each week. (Pray especially for your elders: David Gardner, Darrel Herschberger, Alex Steele, Tony Weber, and myself that we’d seek the LORD and lead wisely).

Honored to journey with you in fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20),
-Pastor Matt

Pastor Post: March 6, 2013

The Pastor Post is a bi-monthly update from Pastor Matt with a brief meditation as well as information on upcoming events in the life of Cornerstone Church.

March 6, 2013

Dear friends,

I want to say a big thank you to all our nursery and children’s church workers. Sometimes we forget what a blessing it is to have loving volunteers who care for our little ones week in and week out… thank you.

I want to say a big thank you to our deacons, set up and tear down crews, and all the people who serve in the shadows but are the backbone to our church. Thank you for picking up friends and getting them to church. Thank you for welcoming new faces. Thank you for cleaning up messes. Thank you for sending notes to the tired, the hurting, and the discouraged. You are doing the things Jesus said His people would do! Glory to God.

Quick updates:

1) Final encouragement: The elders are encouraging you to go a bit deeper in March-May with one person in our church family over regular meals (weekly, every other week, monthly, whatever works). Go out for lunch, have the friend over, or bring your families together. Pursue a David-Jonathan friendship one meal at a time. And remember, quality friends take quality time. For those of you who missed any sermons in the “Seven Marks of a Life-Giving Friend,” you can find them online here: http://cornerstone-marion.org/category/sermon-audio/

2) HOLY WEEK is coming. Check out this link to get all the details regarding services and special events: http://cornerstone-marion.org/2013/03/06/holy-week-2013/

3) GOOD FRIDAY: I want to particularly mention our combined Good Friday worship service with Northbrook Baptist Church. The service will be @6:30PM on Friday night March 29th (childcare provided). If you’d like to sing in the choir, please attend choir practices at Northbrook Baptist Church on the 2 Wednesdays leading up to the service at 7:15PM. You will also need to attend a mandatory final practice/rehearsal on Thursday night March 28th at 6:30PM.

4) Holy Week Outreach: Also, during the week leading up to Easter, we will be going out into neighborhoods to pray for our community and invite them to our Holy Week services. If the Lord allows, we will also be sharing the gospel. If you would like to assist in this project, please attend one of two trainings happening Sundays March 17th and March 24th at 8:30AM at Collins Road Theater.

5) Special Visit: On Sunday March 17, Pastor Kent and Jan McKinnon will be a part of our worship service and Flint Sunday School hour. Kent and Jan helped start Cornerstone Church in the formative years of 2000-2002. We’ve also supported them for a number of years as missionaries in Poland. Kent and Jan will be sharing about where the Lord is leading them next. For those who would like to connect more with Kent and Jan, they will be heading to the Lindale Mall Food Court after the service for lunch.

Thanks for serving Christ and this church together!

-Pastor Matt

Christ’s Community on Christ’s Mission

Our 2012-2013 Vision is that we’d reflect Beautiful Unity through Christ-Centered Community. But what if we are unified on some purpose or mission contrary to Christ’s mission for the Church? What if we’re not going in the direction God wants His church to go? Thus, it seems important that we turn our sights for the next several weeks on making sure we are a Christ-centered community engaged on Christ’s mission.

To accomplish this, we move to the New Testament book of Acts. Some call this book the “Acts of the Apostles.” Others have learned that it is really the “Acts of the Holy Spirit in the Lives of the Apostles.” In this book we see Christ’s mission on display. In this book we watch the seedbed of Christ’s church grow and develop. We learn the founding principles of Christ’s church in the 1st century that give shape to how the 21st church should continue to be engage in Christ’s mission.

Over the next few months we are going to tackle this key book in 4 parts…

Part 1: “What Dr. Luke Doesn’t Want Us to Miss” In March, we are going to take a wide-angled look at some major truths Dr. Luke wants us to understand. Many of you know Dr. Luke was a physician and early missionary of the early church. Dr. Luke wrote both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.  We are going to look at 3 major themes found in both Luke and Acts that we need to understand for our lives today: 1) Jesus is Lord (March 10); 2) Jesus is Savior (March 24); 3) Jesus is Alive (Easter Sunday sermon, March 31).

Part 2: “The Church is Born” (Acts 1-2)  In April, we will look at the earliest days of Christ’s church.  We’ll see how the church was and is founded, empowered, and mightily blessed.

Part 3: “Hitting the Church Jackpot” (Acts 2:42-47)  What does it mean to hit the church jackpot? Is it more butts in seats, bucks in the bank, or buildings on display? Is it a fancy preacher or a sweet children’s ministry? What if the principles of a New Testament church run contrary to what most Westerners think is hitting  the church jackpot? We’ll take 5 weeks starting in May to unpack what the church is really to be about.

Part 4: “The Church on the Move” (Acts 3-8)  Then in June-August we’ll walk through the early chapters of the book of Acts. Maybe the things learned about when the early church was on the move will help us to make sure we are moving along with Christ’s mission as well.

What does it look like to be Christ’s Community on Christ’s Mission? Well,I hope we can all answer that question a little better in the months ahead.
