Pastor Post: August 30, 2012

The Pastor Post is a bi-monthly update from Pastor Matt with a brief meditation as well as information on upcoming events in the life of Cornerstone Church.

August 30, 2012

Friends,

We are ready to go this Sunday…a new sermon series, new small groups, new reading plans, new dreams, new friends…exciting huh?!?

For those who didn’t catch it, I recommend listening to my sermon from last Sunday. I was able to share a bit about the hopes the elders have for our church this year and present in greater detail the 2012-2013 Vision. You can listen or download the sermon here:  http://cornerstone-marion.org/2012/08/26/august-26-2012-psalm-133-beautiful-unity/

By way of reminder, the elders are inviting each person to take steps of faith to grow as a life-giving friend in God’s family. We believe there are 3 core practices that serve as pathways to this end: 1) Contribute to God’s work with your time, talent and treasure; 2) Belong to God’s family by getting involved in a weekly small group; and 3) Pursue a David-Jonathan friendship this year. Each of these ideas will be discussed and encouraged throughout the year in greater depth. Would you today commit to pray for your church family and your own heart that we might each grow as life-giving friends in God’s family?

Church News:

New Sermon Series and Small Groups Launching September 2:  Please consider jumping into a Cornerstone Church small group as we study John 13-17 this Fall (details will be in this week’s bulletin). Our sermon series is called “Learning Community from the Upper Room.” More info can be read about this new series here: http://cornerstone-marion.org/2012/08/23/fall-2012-series-learning-community-from-the-upper-room/

Sermon Series Study Aids: Each Sunday Pastor Matt will have personal study guides available for those who would like to do some personal Bible study in preparation for the upcoming and small group. These study guides will also be sent out each week via email (see attachment to this week’s Pastor Post). So too, we have Daily Reading Guides available for people desiring to get in the Word daily. If you would appreciate some direction this Fall on passages that relate to the sermon series, you can get a copy of the reading guide on the table by the offering box this Sunday or online at: http://cornerstone-marion.org/docs/Fall_2012_Reading_Guide.pdf Don’t forget we will also be memorizing John 15:1-17.

Spiritual Life Retreat (October 26-27): We will be taking 20 adults on a weekend away to focus on spiritual disciplines, the value of rest, and to grow in intimacy with the LORD and each other (more details to come). Please mark your calendars. Once retreat information comes out, we will take the first 20 to register. For those who cannot attend this Fall, we hope to offer a similar retreat in the Spring.

By grace,

Pastor Matt

Fall 2012 Series: Learning Community from the Upper Room

The adventure begins September 2, 2012. The adventure involves great risk, but the rewards are well worth it.

Here’s what the adventure looks like Fall 2012…

1. Pastor Matt is going to be preaching a sermon series “Learning Community form the Upper Room” from John 13-17.

2. You are invited to attend a weekly small group that will be attempting to live out the kind of community principles we learn from John 13-17.

3. You are also invited to do some personal study. A Daily Reading Guide is available listing Scripture readings up to Thanksgiving. So too, Pastor Matt will be providing a Weekly Personal Study guide via email and on print one week in advance of each sermon.

4. Starting September 2, we will also be memorizing one verse each week from John 15:1-17.

We invite each of you to grow as a life-giving friend in God’s family. We are asking God to make us a church that reflects beautiful unity through Christ-centered community. To accomplish this we need your prayers and participation.

Pastor Post: August 15, 2012

The Pastor Post is a bi-monthly update from Pastor Matt with a brief meditation as well as information on upcoming events in the life of Cornerstone Church.

August 15, 2012

Dear Church Family,

I’m pleased to announce that at our congregational meeting on Monday night August 13 our church family affirmed both the updated language that expresses our church’s mission, values, etc. and the 2012-2013 vision. We are committed to our mission of faith and family growth in order to advance the Gospel locally and globally.

Over the next 12 months, we want to zero in on “family growth” to overthrow spiritual apathy and isolation. We want to be a church marked by deep intimacy. We want to be a church filled with loving relationships. We want to be a place where people know each other and are known by each other. We want to be a place where brothers and sisters in Christ dwell together in unity. I plan to present a broader picture of what this means on Sunday August 26. Until then would you begin to pray for yourself and this church family?

Pray that we’d be a place where we serve each other with our time, talents, and treasure. Pray that we’d be  place where we commit to share life daily and weekly. Pray specifically that our small group ministry would be a place where God is treasured through Bible study and where relationships are deepened through the Holy Spirit. So too, would you pray that individuals in our body would develop deeper friendships in 2012-2013? David might not have ever been King if it were not for his friendship with Jonathan. Caleb and Joshua were united in their faith. Paul had Timothy and Silas and Barnabas. Peter and John served side-by-side in the trenches of  ministry. And don’t forget the unselfish friendship Ruth offered to her mother-in-law Naomi (yes, her mother-in-law). Who’s your Jonathan? Who is your Ruth? Ask God for this type of special friendship.

Pastor Post: July 26, 2012

The Pastor Post is a bi-monthly update from Pastor Matt with a brief meditation as well as information on upcoming events in the life of Cornerstone Church.

 July 26, 2012

Dear Church family,

We have a number of announcements so I will be brief with my meditation. Please read through the important announcements below. Pray concerning these items. Also, please mark your calendars for the important dates.

Meditation:  In Luke 12:31, we read that Jesus commands his followers to “Seek his kingdom.” To seek Christ’s kingdom is to seek the rule and reign of God in all spheres of life. The kingdom of God is the blessed reign and presence of God in the universe, where sin, death and decay are pushed back and where light, love, truth, mercy and power are put on display. We are to seek this kingdom in our lives and in the world around us. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to just get a small taste of a kingdom like this? But the very next verse (Luke 12:32) says something startling: “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” O, the depth of joy that springs forth to know that God is pleased to bring His kingdom into our lives and world. We are not abandoned sheep but participants in God’s flock. Our heavenly Father loves us as His own, and He delights to give us His kingdom.

School Supply Drive

Church Family!

Starting this Sunday July 15 and on July 22, you will have the opportunity to choose to help one or two students from Bowman Woods Elementary or Oak Ridge Middle School with the purchase of their 2012-2013 School Supplies.

Here’s how this will work:

1) On Sunday 15 or 22, you can sign up in the lobby to provide school supplies for either a boy or girl in Kindergartner through 5th grade at Bowman Woods Elementary or a boy or girl 6th-8th grade from Oak Ridge Middle school. You are signing up to buy the school supplies. You do not need to purchase a backpack for the child. If you want to buy a backpack and fill them with the supplies that will be great. Just know that that is an optional contribution.

2) We have school supply needs for 25 students. If we run out of school supply lists, we will let people sign up to bring a backpack by itself.

3) On Sunday July 29 (or before at the church office), we need all of our school supplies and backpacks returned. We will then deliver them to Marion Cares (the non-profit organization organizing this school supply drive). Please make sure you attach the information on the school supplies for which grade, gender, and school you are blessing.

We have a great opportunity to serve our community this summer. May we be a light that draws others to worship our Father in heaven.

Thanks again!

-Pastor Matt
