Pastor Post: November 14, 2014

lectureThe Pastor Post is a regular update from Pastor Matt with a brief meditation as well as information on upcoming events in the life of Cornerstone Church.

Dear Church family,

It’s an interesting season in the life of our church family. On one hand we are building something special at our Warehouse for Worship. Each week the sanctuary construction at 925 Blairs Ferry Road continues. Each week we see this space become closer to reality. Soon we will worship God together in song, in Word, and in receiving the Lord’s Supper and baptism. Thank you for your labors and your financial gifts.

On the other hand, we are building week in and week out the church of God.This is not to be confused with any physical structure. The church of God is the collection of God’s people who covenant together to honor the LORD and fulfill His mission on this earth. I’m seeing teenagers be instructed in the ways of God. I’m watching seniors explore and surrender to Jesus for salvation and life the first time in their lives. I’m seeing young married couples working together to honor Christ. I’m seeing married couples into the 3rd and 4th decade of their marriages still pursuing Christ and holiness in their marriages.

It is absolutely beautiful, breathtaking, and glorious. What a mighty God we serve!

Rather than list off a series of announcements in this Pastor Post, let me offer some prayer requests for our church family and the ministries of this church (maybe you could print this off and put it in your Bible for the next month):

1) Pray for the congregational meeting this Sunday November 16. Pray that we as God’s family would have the mind of Christ regarding our future servant-leaders, financial commitments, and ministry goals.

2) Pray for the new arrival of Evelyn Jessa McCreary yesterday (Nov. 13) and parents Mark and Katheryn. Pray also for Andrew and Laura Bigler as they are in the final weeks of their pregnancy. Pray also for those who desire children and yet are in a season of waiting. Pray for those children and parents who are currently estranged from one another. Pray for healing, grace, and restoration.

3) Pray for the outreach ministries of our church family. Pray that our Operation Christmas Child boxes speak Christ’s love around the world. Pray for the missionaries of Cornerstone Church (McKinnons, Colliers, Couches, Hesses, and our regional and national denominational support). Pray for other ways we can express Christ’s love and truth this holiday season.

4) Pray for our continued building progress. Pray for our dedicated volunteer labor force who set aside personal projects and responsibilities to support our church. Pray for continued financial generosity during 2014 that allow for us to complete the major phases of this building project. Pray that we’d honor the LORD with proportional sacrifices reflecting His great gifts to us.

5) Pray for the planning and implementation of new ministry endeavors in 2015. Pray for our small groups ministries. Pray for new ministries being developed to help new visitors connect to Cornerstone, ministries to proclaim the Gospel, and ministries that give people a “next step” for their spiritual growth. Your shepherds need wisdom; pray for them.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Matt

One Month In – In the Word for our Worlds

Friends,

By way of reminder, the elders are encouraging each person at Cornerstone Church to take an extended time for reflection each month. During these times, please pause and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in a time of personal evaluation.

Questions for monthly reflection are as follows:

What impact is happening in your personal world? Are you more patient, kind, loving, joyful, etc.?

What impact is occurring in your home world? Are you a better sibling, child, parent, and/or spouse? Are you growing in love and respect for those closest to you?

What impacts are evident in your work world? Are you working more diligently, with greater integrity, and with a passion to honor God and serve neighbor? Are you putting the needs of others (customers, coworkers, etc.) before your own?

What impact is resulting among your neighbors? Are you building friendships with those you live near, work beside, and interact with? Are you finding ways to serve needs and share Christ?

What impact is moving out to the nations? Are you praying more for people around the world? Are you financially supporting those serving Christ around the globe in increasing measure? Are you taking personal steps to share Christ locally and globally with those most in need?

September 11, 2014

Dear Church family,

The 13th anniversary of 9-11 brings all kinds of emotions to me. But it also brings up this important conversation of Jesus during his earthly ministry:

NIV  Luke 13:1-5 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them–do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

Some implications we must consider for our lives today:

1) Atrocities strike people every century, every decade, and every day.

2) This is not necessarily because someone is more sinful than another; sadly, it is the reality we all are subjected to in this fallen world.

3) Even in such a vulnerable world, there is hope beyond this world for all who repent of theirs sins and turn to follow after God.

4) All tragedies, and even small frustrations, remind us that our lives and this world are in desperate need of redemption.

I pray that as you meditate on this anniversary, you would be led to repent personally and pray unceasingly for the worlds around you–for your home, work, neighbors, and nations.

August 29, 2014

Dear Church family,

Our 2014-2015 ministry year is about to kick off. Our theme this year is “In the Word for our Worlds.” We desire to be transformed by the Word of God so that we can be agents of transformation in the worlds God has put it–particularly at home, at work, with our neighbors, and extending to the nations. More information on our 2014-2015 vision can be seen by downloading and printing this informational brochure: https://cornerstone-marion.org/docs/2014_15_Vision.pdf

Key things coming up in our church family:

New Sermon Series in Ecclesiastes: This Sunday we start a sermon series in the book of Ecclesiastes. This book is about finding meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. This sermon series should appeal to skeptics and doubters of the Christian faith so please invite your neighbors and friends. But it will also help those already followers of Christ find hope in the seasons of life that feel empty and meaningless.

Small Groups launch: All of our home Bible study groups begin this coming week. Please plan to plug into a group. The times/places of these small groups is posted at the bottom.

New Bible Reading Plan, Starts September 1: Please join the dozens of folks who have already committed to reading the Bible daily from September 1st through the end of the year. You can get a printed Bible reading chart this Sunday or you can download the chart here: https://cornerstone-marion.org/docs/Reading_Guide_Fall2014.pdf

Bible Discussion Group for Women: For 8 weeks starting Sept. 8th, Cornerstone will be hosting a Bible Discussion Group for women from 10 to 11am on Monday mornings. If you are newer to Cornerstone or are interested in investigating the Bible with other women, this is for you! There is no preparation needed; we will simply read and discuss questions around a passage from the book of John each week. Please contact Carrie Proctor with the number of children you need care for so we can provide adequate childcare.

Women of Cornerstone, Save the Date: Coffee, light refreshments, and informational meeting about upcoming ministry events for women on Monday, September 15th 7-9PM at The Warehouse (a.k.a “the church building”).

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Matt

2014-2015 Vision – “In the Word for our Worlds”

2014The Elders of Cornerstone Church believe this coming year is to be dedicated to a fresh reading of the Scriptures that would go beyond only a intellectual understanding but lead to heart, mind, and soul transformation.

We believe that intimacy with the Word transforms relationships. It transforms our relationships with God, brothers and sisters in the church, and those outside the church.

It transforms our ability communicate the gospel clearly with our friends and those we meet on the street.

We are looking for the transformation to begin within the home and then go to work, neighbors, and nations.
