Help construct our Sanctuary!

BuildCornerstone Church News:

We are making a lot of progress but need more help completing the construction of our new Sanctuary, nursery, and children’s church rooms.

For the next several Thursday nights (5:00 – 9:00 PM) and Saturday mornings (8:00 – 12:00 AM) we will be working to complete the project.  Workers are likely needed from, Now, to Labor Day.  As we are different parts of the body of Christ (some are hands, feet, eyes, ears), so too are the laborers needed for this project.  Skills are appreciated but not necessary.  Let me know how you would like to help, and I will coordinate efforts.

If you can help, here are some of the areas to serve:

  • Bring food to share with the workers
  • Broom sweep the work areas
  • General helper to hand tools or supplies to others on a ladder
  • Bring a hammer, drill, pry bar, tape measure or other small carpentry tools
  • Install wood and steel stud wall framing
  • Install insulation for sound proofing the walls
  • Sort six pallets of 18” carpet squares into good, fair, and poor quality
  • Simply show up, and we’ll find something meaningful for you to do
  • Pat someone on the back and provide words of encouragement
  • Pray for safety (we are almost injury free, praise God)

There’s no child care, but they can play foosball or hockey while you help.  Otherwise, 10 years or older is probably the age limit for helpers in the back room.

It’s work, but we actually are having a lot of fun and camaraderie.  Feel free to come help once or every time.

Thank you,

Greg Dryden

Pastor Post: June 10, 2014

church-newsThe Pastor Post is a regular update from Pastor Matt with a brief meditation as well as information on upcoming events in the life of Cornerstone Church.

June 10, 2014

Dear Church Family,

Because of your generosity and support, I leave in one hour to begin my vacation and sabbatical leave. Please pray that I’d use these weeks to pray, engage with my family and friends, and seek the Lord’s face for the future. Pray this break is good for Carrie and our children (we’re excited for a whole week together at Hidden Acres Christian Camp).

Pray that when I return to full-time ministry responsibilities on July 14, I will be refreshed and reignited to serve the LORD and this church with unfettered joy.

Pray also for MaryLou Erlacher and Gabe Erickson who will be joining me for the Acton University conference on faith, work, and economics in Grand Rapids during my sabbatical.

Pray also for the elders and other volunteer leaders who are stepping up to fulfill many ministry responsibilities. I have no doubt you will be blessed by the guest preachers and various ministries occurring this summer.

By way of reminder, I will not be reading or responding to email until July 14. If there are any emergencies, contact David Gardner, our elder chairman, first (842-3225). For non-emergencies you can leave a voice mail at the church office (447-1688) or send an email to theelders@cornerstone-marion.org. Someone will respond to your questions in a few days.

When I get back into preaching in July we’ll study the American Idols of sex and power. I’m already looking forward to being with you again.

Your pastor loves you. Your pastor will miss you.

Thanks again for this gift.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Matt

Dear friends and family,

Thanks for a great season of ministry the past several weeks. I was personally blessed by all the work, ideas, and creativity that went into the Christianity 101 series and the “Intimacy, Relationships, and Sexuality” retreat. So too, thank you to all the small group leaders, youth group leaders, Sunday morning servants and retreat support staff! Your labors are not in vain.

Let me give you a heads up on the next few weeks of ministry leading into the summer:

The Hesses are coming this Sunday May 18:  Eric and Miriam Hesse are going with Reach Global (the missionary arm of the Evangelical Free Church of America) to Berlin, Germany as missionaries. We will get to hear about their ministry, hear Eric preach the Word, and eat a meal with them this Sunday. Please consider supporting them financially. We’ll take a special offering for them on May 25 to help them raise necessary funds.

Church Meal and Meeting this Sunday May 18: Stick around after the service for a meal from 11:45AM-1PM. We’ll then have a congregational meeting starting around 1PM. There will be discussion on the building progress, Pastor Matt’s Sabbatical, and a few church family issues.

American Idols starts May 25 – No, I’m not going to sing! Starting May 25 into early August, we will be having a sermon series called “American Idols.” An idol is any good thing that gets turned into the ultimate thing. We worship what we think will make us happy. Sadly, too many people worship money, sex, and power and all other kinds of good things that can never be ultimate things. This summer we’ll look for hope and freedom from false gods…we’ll look for hope and freedom through Jesus.

Elder Retreat June 2-3 – Please pray for the spiritual overseers of our church family as they take 36 hours to pray, reflect over the past year, and set a ministry direction for the 2014-2015 ministry year.

Blessings,

-Pastor Matt
