Dear Church,

Once upon a time a lone prophet, Elijah, stands in a contest of faith versus hundreds of pagans. Which God is true? What truth should be believed? Answer: we will follow the God who reveals himself from heaven. So, the pagans build an altar and lay out a sacrifice. They call on their gods to send fire and consume the sacrifice. Nothing happens, for minutes, for hours, zero, zilch, nada. The lone prophet of Israel sasses the pagan priests, “Maybe he’s tired or deaf. Yell louder. Speak up.” More silence. Nothing happens. Finally, the pagans give up and say, “Ok, Elijah, your turn.” Elijah builds the altar, lays out the sacrifice, pours thousands of gallons of water on top for good measure. Prays a short prayer. And then, BOOM! No waiting, no pause, no doubts–God sends fire from heaven. The true God revealed himself from heaven–the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The deliverer from Egypt, the covenant God of Israel, the Lord of heaven and earth. 700 years later, another altar is built, another sacrifice offered, but if you look carefully, you’ll see that this is God himself revealing Himself from heaven. This is Jesus, the Son of God, taking the judgment of heaven on himself. The fire of God’s wrath falls on God the Son; the sacrifice is consumed.  Which God is true? What truth should be believed? Answer: we will follow the God who reveals himself from heaven.
